6 Scripture Passages to Cultivate a Heart of Gratitude

I wish I woke up each morning with an attitude of gratitude. But the truth is: I tend to approach life focused on what’s wrong and undone. I’m often anxious about the unknowns lurking around the corner.

Instead of lips full or praise, I run to God babbling a litany of requests for certainty, assurances, and utterances of “Please fix it now, Jesus.”

And while our good Father welcomes our pleas, He also desires us to walk through life with grateful hearts and joyful minds (Col. 3:15-17).

Yet, when we experience a health crisis, rejection, or any sort of grief, it’s hard to look past the pain to see God’s glory. But friend, we can set our eyes on the goodness of the Lord. He surrounds us with His presence, protection, and peace.

Right in the midst of heartache, we have reasons to rejoice!

If you’re like me, sometimes we need help stirring our hearts toward praise and thanksgiving. Here are six Scripture passages to cultivate a heart of gratitude:

  1. “Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!” - Psalm 107:8 ESV

  2. “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” - Psalm 34:8 ESV

  3. “Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!” - Psalm 31:19 ESV

  4. “He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved… so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.”- Ephesians 1:5-6; 12 ESV

  5. “For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty!” - Zechariah 9:17 ESV

  6. “The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made. All your works shall give thanks to you, O LORD, and all your saints shall bless you! They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.” - Psalm 145:9-12 ESV

Let’s pray like this to stir our hearts to thanks today:

Father, I thank You for being a good God. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to focus on my blessings when my circumstances are hard to endure. Help me turn my heart toward You in praise for the wonderful gifts You’ve given me––Your unfailing love, presence, and provision. I join with all of creation in lifting my heart in gratitude to You for all You’ve done for me, what You’re doing, and what You’ll do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
