A Prayer of Trust for Another Year

Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
So you will find favor and good success
in the sight of God and man.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:3–6 ESV

It’s never easy to walk into the unknown. Whenever I begin a new project, face a new day, or start a new year, it always feels a bit daunting. This January isn’t any different.

A bit of angst shadows the multi-colored notes I write in my crisp calendar. And I can’t help wondering what the future holds. My past experiences have taught me to hold my plans loosely––and to expect the unexpected.

Control is an illusion. Ultimately, what happens isn’t up to me. What an hour, day, or year brings rests in the hands of our sovereign Lord. And when we’re tucked securely in His hands, we can trust our Good Shepherd to lead us along the right path, keep us as we go, and provide our needs along the way.

As we start this new year––not knowing what’s all to come––let’s open our hands and offer a prayer of trust to our God who knows all the things we don’t yet. His love, goodness, and faithfulness will continue now and forever.

Dear Father,

Sometimes I’m anxious when I can’t see what’s ahead. I reach for control, only to find that it’s out of my hands.

Please help me release my questions, desires, and longings and place them into Your almighty hands.

My heart longs to trust You. Give me strength to let go of anything hindering my faith.

When I forget, remind me of Your faithfulness, goodness, and perfect love for me.

Fill me with comfort, joy, and peace as I focus on the truth of who You are––the Great Provider.

As You lead me down the path of another new year, let me follow You wholeheartedly.

Thank You for faith to anchor my heart in hope, knowing You never disappoint.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
