A Reminder from the Birds to Trust God
/Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
Matthew 6:26-27 NIV
Hearing the bird’s chirping outside my window shook me out of my sleep. Its song rose in symphony as it drawled out the lows and climbed through the highs of its melody. Pulling the covers to my chin, I attempted to return to sleep to no avail. I was drawn to the fact that there was still complete darkness shadowing the morning sun. It seemed a little early for so much excitement.
Then the scriptures in Matthew echoed in my mind: Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? I wondered if the bird was singing in expectation of the sun’s appearance? Was this tiny creature resting in the promise that the sun would surely rise, and the Creator would meet each need the day presented?
Many concerns in my own life overwhelmed me that morning. But God met me with a gift from this little bird––a lesson in trusting Him. Just as the bird sang in anticipation of the sun rising, I could lift a heart song in expectation of God’s provision for my every need (Philippians 4:19). And so, I chose to trade my worries for rest, relying on His promises to care for me. And a wonderful day began.
Friend, did you wake with worry circling in your mind this morning? Maybe you’re wondering how you will face the day before you. Let’s take a lesson from the birds and trust that Jesus will provide all we need to make it through. After all, He has already gone ahead of us.
Prayer
Lord, sometimes it’s difficult to trust You when I am consumed with worries. Help me to believe in Your promise to provide all I need. Thank You for caring for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Ponder
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. ~ 1 Peter 5:7 NIV
How does knowing God’s caring for the birds––lowly creatures––reveal His great love for you? List circumstances in your life that you will release to God’s care, and determine to trust Him to provide your need.
