Anchored in the Names of God || Part 2
/Today, we are continuing our series on the names of God. If you missed the Anchored in the Names of God Part 1, you can find it here. Thank you for joining me in this series.
It is my prayer that we experience more of God’s presence as He reveals Himself to us through the His names found in Scripture.
El Shaddai: God Almighty
When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between me and you, and multiply you greatly.”
Genesis 17:1-2 ESV
It was twenty-four years since God had promised Abraham an heir who would make him the Father of Nations. In those years of waiting, all human possibility of God’s promise being fulfilled disintegrated. Yet when Abraham was 99 years old, God came on the scene and performed a miracle for him and his wife Sarah by planting life into her barren wound.
He declares Himself, “God Almighty,” which emphasizes His power. That same power of Almighty God works today to fulfill His promises to us just as He fulfilled His promise to Abraham. He is the God who can do all things!
Lord, I praise You for being Almighty God. Your power is beyond my understanding. Fill me with hope as I remember how You fulfilled Your promises to Abraham. Help me trust that You will do the same for me.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Yahweh (Jehovah): The Self-Existent One
God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
Exodus 3:14 ESV
The name Jehovah is found 6,800 times in the Bible and is translated, “Lord God” in the KJV. When God called Moses to lead the Israelites (His chosen people) out of Egyptian slavery, He tells Moses to explain that “I am who I am” has sent him. God is Self-Existent, Strong, Mighty, and Sovereign.
This same God who made––and kept––His covenant with Israel fulfills His promises to us. Whatever we need in life, our Lord, I AM will do it. On this we can rely!
Lord––the Great I Am––I praise You for being the God who fulfills promises. Just as You promised deliverance to the children of Israel, You promise deliverance to me. Help me to know that You will provide all I need in my current situation. I trust that You will do it.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide
Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Genesis 22:14 ESV
The name Jehovah Jireh first appears when Abraham is about to sacrifice Isaac on top of Mount Moriah. But instead of requiring the life of Isaac, God provides a ram in the thicket as a substitute sacrifice. It was there that God revealed Himself as Provider.
And this same God who provided a lamb for Abraham in the nick of time promises to provide all our needs when we surrender to Him. Whether it is a physical, emotional, or spiritual need, our Great Provider will supply it. We have only to hold on to His promises and trust Him for provision.
Lord, thank You for being my Provider. Help me to lay my every need in Your hands, believing You will supply them. Fill me with peace as I trust You to bring it about in Your time, Your way, and according to Your will.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
